You Need to Vote

You Need to Vote

This is probably something that you don’t really want to hear.  Most young people don’t taking voting seriously.  They don’t think their vote matters, that it’s just one vote against many.  In general, young people don’t pay attention to the news or politics.  They find them boring and by ignoring those issues they do themselves a tremendous amount of harm.

You can set all the goals you want making an educated guess as to how much you may be making by a certain point in your life then a politician comes along and does away with the minimum wage law.  Now the employer who was paying $7.75 an hour drops your salary to $5.00 an hour.  What do you think changes like that will do to your goals?  Maybe you are going to college and are anticipating a huge student loan debt but a politician is able to get the finance charges down so you don’t have to pay as much?  Do you think that will help you move towards your goals faster?

There are hundreds of different scenarios that I could give to show how political decisions can affect you but everyone is different.  You will need to look at them for yourself to see what the effects will be and life isn’t just about you.  Do you have a brother or friend who is gay?  Maybe a law doesn’t affect you but it will affect him.  You can show your support by voting against things designed to hurt him because of his sexual orientation.

Quite often people get voted into positions of power only because those who don’t believe in what that politician has to say never bothered to vote.  Then we all complain when that politician comes out with hate-filled or harmful legislation.  Voting is one of the most important things we can do to ensure we live in the kind of country we expect America to be and to help us achieve our goals.
