You would be surprised how often I am told that something or other isn’t fair. Well I have news for anyone just going out into the business world, life isn’t fair. If you expect it to be you will face one disappointment after another.
To begin with quite often the people who are complaining are not asking for things to be fair, they’re asking to be exempt from the rules and regulations. You don’t know how much whining I hear from people who get written up after being late 3 days during one work week. You don’t know how many times I’ve been told that I’m being unfair when I write someone up for wearing clothes that do not conform to the dress code. The bad thing is these people really have convinced themselves that I shouldn’t have written them up. They don’t want fair, they want privilege.
Before you start complaining about things being unfair take an honest look at what you do. Are you violating a known policy? If so accept the fact that you are the one in the wrong, take the hit and don’t do it anymore. Don’t blame your boss for doing his/her job because you do not want to do yours.
That’s the easy part. The hard part is if there is real unfairness in the workplace. If it violates the laws you have that to fall back on but if it’s just a boss with a favorite you are either going to have to figure out a way to deal with the situation or leave. With the new wave of Republicans that have been elected into office and their belief that business owners should be able to do whatever they want, the workplace could become very difficult for some people.
Sit back and take a good hard look at your situation. Is it really that bad? Are you part of the problem? Be honest. Is there any way to avoid the person that you don’t like dealing with? Can you transfer to another department or location? Can you hang on long enough to give yourself time to find another job? Work around the problem if you can but if you really need to leave, do it. What you shouldn’t expect is that the difficult person you just can’t deal with will have some miraculous change of personality. It’s very unfair that you have to leave your job because of a jerk but then again, life isn’t fair.
